The election of city officials shall be conducted in all respects as provided by the laws of Kansas governing the holding of city elections.

At all city elections the polls shall be open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m., unless different hours are set and publicly announced by the county election officer.

(a)   The term of office for newly elected officials shall commence on the second Monday in January following certification of the election by the county election officer.

(b)   Every person elected or appointed to city office, before entering upon the duties of such office, shall take and subscribe an oath or affirmation as specified in K.S.A. 54-106, and amendments thereto, and every such oath or affirmation shall be filed with the city clerk.

Beginning on November 8, 2016, there shall be elected a Mayor (position 1) and two council members (positions 3 and 5) to serve three year terms. Beginning November 7, 2017, and on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November every four years thereafter, there shall be elected three council members (positions 2, 4, and 6) to serve four year terms. Beginning November 5, 2019, and on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November every four years thereafter, there shall be elected a Mayor (position 1) and two council members (positions 3 and 5) to serve four year terms.

All municipal elections held under this section shall be nonpartisan elections.

Persons seeking to hold public office shall be no less than eighteen (18) years of age, shall be a registered voter in good standing, and shall make his or her primary residence within the corporate boundaries of McLouth, Kansas as those boundaries existed on January 1st of the year of the election.

Persons seeking to hold public office shall file a nomination petition or declaration of candidacy, accompanied by any fee required by law, with the Jefferson County Election Officer no later than 12:00 p.m. on June 1st of the year of election. A nomination petition shall be supported by the signatures of five qualified electors of McLouth, Kansas, and shall be on the form provided by the Jefferson County Election Officer.
